Refining Prompts

If your first prompt doesn't provide the answers you are looking for, try adding a word or alter your phrase slightly.  Small changes can provide better results.  Don't be afraid to refine 'as you go'.  Also, collaborate with others and share prompting tips.

Focus on specific Jurisdictions

Explicitly state the jurisdictions you are interested in.  For Example:

  • "Please limit your response to California state law."
  • "I need information on federal regulations and New York state law."
  • "Compare the approach to this issue in Texas and Florida."

Focus on specific VitalLaw® Practice Areas

Clearly indicate the practice area(s) you want to focus on.  For Example:

  • "Analyze this issue from a tax law perspective."
  • "I need information on both labor law and intellectual property aspects of this case."
  • "Please provide insights from corporate law, with specific attention to merger regulations."

Get step-by-step reasoning

Also known as "Chain of Thought" prompting, this method encourages step-by-step reasoning for complex problems, improving performance on multi-step tasks.

Sample Prompt: Analyze this legal scenario step by step: A company's employee accidentally shares confidential information with a competitor. What potential legal issues arise, and what immediate steps should the company take?
